Breastfeeding and nursing your child is not something of a choice, but it is something that you need to do for your own child. Mother’s milk is absolutely necessary for the healthy growth of a child. There are various nutritional values of mother’s milk and it primarily helps in building a strong immune system for the child from a very early age. In spite of this, there are many mothers who shy away from breastfeeding their child, or do not do it for long enough, which in turn might affect the child’s health.

Earlier it was believed that wet nurses are the ones who are supposed to breastfeed newborns and not the mothers. It was considered to be unfashionable. However though times have changed, the idea of breastfeeding still has a lot of taboos to overcome. In fact, some women do not even know that breastfeeding is absolutely necessary for their child’s healthy growth! Ideally, a child is supposed to be breastfed till at least it is six months old. But most mothers give up on it within a month or so because of discomfort. It is not easy finding the right position, but once some mothers do, they breastfeed their child till they are about 4-5 years old!

  1. First up, you have to be ready to experiment. It is highly unlikely that you will find the right position on the first go. Hence you can consult a breastfeeding manual and try out the various position suggestions they have in order to find that comfort spot for breastfeeding.
  2. Breastfeeding is not just about your comfort. Your child has to be comfortable too. In fact only when both of you will be comfortable in it, then only can this emerge as a successful position. You have to ensure that the child is getting the proper nutrition that it needs.
  3. If you are having back aches at the end of the day then you will feel like giving up breastfeeding after a couple of days. This constant pain is there since you have not found the right breastfeeding position. One of the best positions for breastfeeding a newborn when you are having back pains is to sit up on the bed, rest your back against the head of the bed and then take your child in your arms and feed the little one.
  4. You can also try out breastfeeding while lying down in an inclined position. This way you will not have to hold your child and it might be a comfortable alternative if you are having difficulties sitting up for long.

Breastfeeding is easy once you have found the right spot. Keep an open mind and do this for your child’s health.
